Confirmation for the Whole Christian

In Word and Work: An Intersection, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, President Dr. Dale A. Meyer explores the topic of confirmation with Dr. Peter Nafzger, assistant professor of practical theology and director of student life at the Seminary. The two men discuss the alarming number of children who stop attending church after confirmation. Nafzger explains how his former congregation created a new confirmation process to try and deepen the ties of children to their faith. “Confirmation should serve the holistic formation of the Christian and bring them into the Christian life as it’s manifested in the church,” he says. “We can do it and we’ve got to.”

In the audio version, also hear a recent chapel sermon from Nafzger. You can download the episode in video (mp4) or audio (mp3) format at the Word and Work Scholar page.

Word and Work: An Intersection is a video and audio program providing a behind-the-scenes look at ministry where everyday life and God’s Word meet. It is broadcast on KFUO Radio every Thursday at 2:00 pm CT.

We changed our youth confirmation program in the following ways:

    1. Parents attend confirmation classes with their children.
    2. We eliminated a set Sunday for confirmation of an entire class and now we confirm youth on an individual basis when they are ready, willing and have completed the program requirements.
    3. Parents and their children work through bible studies together during the week as part of the confirmation program.
    4. A minimum of 50% church attendance is required before a youth can be confirmed.
